About
The last 2 years have seen a stark improvement in both confidence and performance ability, which Rae is keen to maintain! Performing numerous gigs in the Navy both requested and sporadic, she has even performed comedy going through basic training to a group of shivering and very tired recruits.
Professional nights in the civilian world have also proved to be a great hit for Rae’s development and as the crowds have grown so has her cheekiness to exploit these gigs for her own dating opportunities. A believer in “there is no such thing as a bad gig” Rae has experienced every type of gig you can imagine. From being heckled by a conscientious objector to performing in San Diego for stunned Americans wanting to enjoy some background music, Rae is a charming and engaging individual with a wealth of life experience that leaves crowds in fits of laughter and wanting more.
Backstory
Growing up Rae could never have imagined serving in the military, the RAF and Army cadets she also joined were also of this opinion. Ardently confident she would spend her career “running prisons” in HMPS she elected to study Criminology at university. A brief spell in the prison service proved long enough for Rae and she joined HMS Raleigh in 2016 after a botched attempt to join as a direct entry Training Management Officer (TMO).
During a brief flick through the careers catalogue, Writer (clerk) seemed the likely choice as the recruiter informed her “we can get you in ASAP”. Being unemployed this seemed a bargain and she spent 4 years as an AB Writer serving with the Marines at RM Poole, Main Building London and as Ship’s Company on HMS Queen Elizabeth, where she ran the first official “warship” comedy club (unverified, but likely) raising money for RNRMC.
This remains the greatest night of her Naval career. After a 4 year battle, Rae faced her nemesis, the Admiralty Interview Board (AIB) for the second time and blew the competition away with a strong pass. Joining Dartmouth exactly 4 years later than previously intended she has served as a training officer in a school, been as assistant in Bahrain and now works in the Learning and Development world delivering education and learning opportunities to deployed sailors across the globe. A keen tennis player, Rae has achieved her life long dream to represent the RN in a sporting competition and found this 100 times more terrifying than stand up comedy due to how serious tennis most certainly is. Described as a true “throbber” by her peers she has no intention of leaving the RN as she often reminds herself “she isn’t worth a lot outside anyway and enjoys wearing a beret too much”.
Rae says:
”Coming up to the Fringe to work with Project Comedy has been such a privilege and honour. Seeing the laughs on people’s faces and smiles afterwards as they share their own military stories has been touching and humbling. Every donation in the bucket has been so special as it is going directly to not only changing but also saving lives, I couldn’t have had a greater cause to be performing for and this needs to be grow each year!"
